About the School of Naval Architecture

The School of Naval Architecture at Dalian University of Technology (DUT) was established in 1949 and is one of the earliest established departments of the university. Its primary purpose is to educate and cultivate high-level engineers in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering, implement intensive scientific research and conduct high-standard production-study-research cooperation for the nation.

The school offers the undergraduate major of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, which belongs to the national “211 Project” and “985 Project” key construction disciplines. The subject has the first-class doctor degree discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and three second-class disciplines including Design and Manufacture of Ship and Ocean Structure, Underwater Acoustic Engineering and Marine Engineering. All these three disciplines can grant both master and doctor degrees and of which the discipline of Design and Manufacture of Ships and Marine Structures is second-class national key discipline. The school also has the station for post-doctoral research in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Currently, the school has total 43 staff including one double employed academician, one member of The Recruitment Program of Global Young Experts, one owner of Outstanding Youth Foundation of NSFC, 10 doctoral supervisors, 10 professors and 19 associate professors. There are 625 undergraduate students, 169 full-time master degree candidates, 72 engineering postgraduates and 37 doctoral candidates. Including the national engineering research center of shipbuilding, there are five Center and laboratories of different levels have been established. Under these centers, there are specifically six laboratories serving for the teaching and research activities, which include virtual design laboratory of the ship, ship model towing tank, ship building technology lab, structural vibration lab, structure damage control laboratory and acoustical lab. The experiment facilities of the laboratories have reached the domestic advanced level.

The school has made outstanding contributions in terms of both personnel cultivation and scientific research. The school staffs have taken the lead to get more than ten important awards including the second prize of State Science and Technology Awards. The school has established close relationship with both domestic and international organizations. Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry and Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industries have set up the state recognized Enterprise Technology Center in the school. Lloyds Register of Shipping, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai have established special scholarship for the students. According to the Joint training agreement with University of Strathclyde UK and University of Duisburg-Essen Germany, good undergraduate graduates can be directly recommended to pursue a master's degree in these two universities.
