About the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics
School of Aeronautics and Astronautics was founded in Dec. 17th, 2008 based on existed aerospace related research and teaching programs in the Faculty of Vehicle Engineering and Mechanics, targeting to be a world renowned institute. It keeps fostering elite individuals, promoting the development of aerospace science and technology and the collaborations with the industries since the formation. Special attentions were given to the growth of the young faculty members to establish a sustainable development. Progresses were made in the program development, personnel hiring, international collaboration, and innovations in research and educations.
The key research disciplines of the school include aerodynamics and propulsion (aircraft design and propulsion system design, computational fluid dynamics, thermal protection technologies), structures and materials (composite materials design, special materials and structures, structural design and evaluations and structural health monitoring technology), dynamics and control technologies (vehicle dynamics, vehicle guidance technology, navigation guidance and control technology, system simulation, micro-vibrations and precision instrumentation and unmanned vehicle technologies).
Research funding from different sources grew at a rapid rate since the foundation of the school. As many as 160 research projects were carried out for a total funding of 36.7 million RMB Yuan (1.05 million Yuan per faculty member). The sources include the national key research programs, defense 973 programs, national 973 and 863 programs, NSFC (National Science Foundation of China) key, regular and new faculty projects and many other national and provincial agencies. Collaborations were established with the leading research institutes and corporations including the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China.
The School of Aeronautics and Astronautics currently has 38 employees, including 35 full-time faculty members. Among them, there are 10 full professors, 13 associate professors, 8 lecturers and 4 in-track Post-Doctoral and Research Fellows. There is 1 member of the Chinese Engineering Academy, 2 members of the Board of Evaluation for the Aerospace Sciences in the State Council, 3 selected for the New Century Talents program by the Ministry of Education; An additional 8 members of the Academies are now working part-time for the school. The faculties members received many awards including the prodigious Natural Science Discovery Awards. More than 300 papers and 5 books were published, 10 patents were granted.
The school admitted the first group of undergraduate students since 2009 and master students since 2013. Currently, enrollment at the school reaches 233 full-time students including over 26 Ph. D. students, 57 Master’s students, 150 undergraduates. The school is currently offering a Bachelor program in Aircraft Design and Engineering and Masters programs in the Aerospace Science and Technology, the Aerospace Engineering and the Navigation Guidance and Control Technology.
