About the Department of Engineering Mechanics
The Department of Engineering Mechanics at Dalian University of Technology (DUT) was founded in 1957 by two distinguished Professors – Prof. Lingxi Qian and Prof. Limin Tang. Its primary purpose was to reach the international advanced level in aspects of applied basic research, scientific research foundation, academic groups building and cultivation of talents and top-level engineers, etc.
In 2007, the Engineering Mechanics was recognized as the first-class national key discipline of Mechanics. Together with the ‘State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment’, the department established the research excellent centers for ‘Theories and Method of Computational Mechanics and Engineering Science Computation’, ‘Modern theory and Algorithm of Structural Optimization’, ‘Development and Application of Research on Large-scale Engineering Computational Software System’, ‘Biomechanics and nano-mechanics’, ‘Fluid and Soil Mechanics’, etc. The department possesses excellent academic members, including 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Science (Wanxie Zhong, Gengdong Cheng and Changyu Sheng), 7 National Outstanding Young Scholars and 14 Ministry of Education ‘Trans – Century and the New Century Talents’.
The Department of Engineering Mechanics is the basis for cultivating excellent and talented people. In the past 5 years, approximately 146 Ph.D and 343 graduate students were graduated from this department. Among them, 1 Ph.D thesis won the ‘Ministry of Education Excellent Doctoral Thesis’ award, 2 were nominated for this award and 6 were awarded the ‘Excellent Doctoral Thesis of Liaoning Province’.
The Department of Engineering Mechanics is also the center for many national and international academic activities. In recent years, more than 24 national and international conferences were organized and held here. It has established long-term collaborations with more than 20 overseas famous universities and research institutes, including Durham University, UK, University of California, Berkeley, etc. In addition, the Chinese Journal of Computational Mechanics, which was indexed by Ei Compendex and one of the key journal in the field of Engineering Mechanics, was established and located here.
